EQ

EQ: What is the best way to help teenage girls feel confident about their bodies?
(1) Define possible terms in your EQ (e.g. successful, effective).
Best Way: something that is helpful for the girls to do.
Confident: To hold their head up high a be able to feel good about the way they look, or a flaw that they may have.(2) So far based on your research, what are possible answers to your EQ?
I noticed media has to do alot with the influence of what girls should look like, or what society thinks girls should look like. It's every where. Magazines, music videos, television, and billboards.
(3) What has been your most important printed source and why?
Media wise dove commercials have been really good, but sources I have received from CalPoly database have been really good. I'm not sure which one it is because it is currently in my folder at school. It's about how even online it is hard to not feel like your not good enough. There is a dating website called beautifulpeople.com? and they actually kick people off if they are not considered "pretty."

Idea Approval

What would you like to do/create for your independent component?

I actually was thinking about making a club with Valerie Dulay at school. What we would do is have girls talk about what keeps them down from feeling good about their bodies, and how media and what types of media effect the way they see themselves.
If that is not possible, I plan to work at my hospital. They have a group of girls that go to patients rooms and give them make overs and talk about what they are good at and show them everything good about them. By doing this, this alows them to think about the good and not worry about the bad.

Explain how you think this will be a worthwhile use of 30 hours?

Talking to different girls and seeing how and what effects them will be useful finding out what is making them feel down about themselves. Whether it's seeing skinny models in the magazine, or having family members pressure them into losing weight. What ever it maybe this will help see all the different flaw that are out there in the world that are making girls feel like this.

How will this help you to answer your EQ?

My essential question is what is the best way to help teenage girls feel confident about their bodies?
By finding out what is hurting girls view of themselves, maybe that will lead me to finding out what it is best for them to do about staying positive. The club and the hospital will let me learn about a variety of self esteem issues I may have never thought about.

I think this was important to know because that means there are different methods certain people, as far as healing. I

Five-Minute Presentation Reflection

1. What I think stood out was having all the examples of what the magazines and showing every one why it is a girl could get have a self esteem issue. I think every one saw what i was saying because there were a lot of ohhh and oh yea's that I heard. I
2. I think the hardest part was either having everyone being able to see the pictures in the magazine or trying to say everything I wanted to. I want to say more but I had 2 seconds left so I wasn't able to say it. Over all i think I did well and I got a lot of compliments so I'm excited about that.
