Senior Project Reflection

PART I: Two-Hour Presentation
(1) Two-Hour Presentation Student Assessment P +
Why?
I feel that I followed the contract and my presentation was creative. I had them sign the body peace treaty. It is a treaty that is about not beating your body. The activites i did i feel correseponded with my answers well.

What are you most proud of in your 2 hour presentation and why?
I'm most proud of my sponge activity. I had them write three things they don't like about but then at the end as they were signing my body peace treaty, I had them fill out a little slip that said I love my _____ when i'm wearing _______ because it makes me fell beautiful and confident. I had them replace it over their mirrors. So a lot of the small stuff I did, I think made my presentaion better as a whole.

PART II: Overall Senior Project Experience

(3) What do you think you did well on in the project? What could you have done better? Please explain.
I think my overall helping girls; whether with the girl scouts or the girls who saw my presentation. I helped them really understand that media is a big thing. So i think bringing awareness is something I did well on. Also my 2 independent task with the blog I created, I recieved a lot of followers, more then Gabrielle's and my personal blog we share. I wish I could of done my research better, my dad put my family throught a lot. I feel like I just wasn't on the top of my priority list. Not only did I do it friday morning most days, but I don't have a printer to print my articles out either.

(4) What is the best way to help a girl feel confiedent about her self-esteem?
Make her aware of media. Help her live a healthy life style.

(5) Yes, because PURTHER said one of my answers wasn't good enough. So I changed my essential question for no reason. I decide to keep it because I was to lazy to change it back. Lol jk my new essential question helped with answers.

(6) Help us work on and develope our questions more? Make sure that our essential question or our answers really go hand in hand. Make sure that they know the difference between best and effective and why they would choice that over the other.

(7) Overall Senior Project Assessment

P -

I've done the requirements I was suppose to do, not the best all because of family problems to the point that I didn't give it my all, but I did do all of it. I've done every thing asked, I think to a profecient level, some higher, some not so high. Not to the point of a cr though.

Service Learning

• I started in November 15, and went every Monday for 2 hours.
• Claudia Lagoo - 626-926-8450

Interpretive:
I think my most important experience was actually seeing the low and high self-esteem in the girls. Seeing some of the pressure put on the some of the girls by other girls is probably one of the biggest things that I saw because when researching, the book said that peer pressure, and how peers see you has a big influensce on girls.

Applied:
With this, it relates to my essential question because my essential question is what is the best way to help a girl with her self esteem, and what I have learned doing on of my activites I did with the girls that not only do peers effect them. But media does in a huge way. A lot of the girls feel pressure to be smaller. One of the girls had said that she likes to do good in school, because that's the only thing she can feel confident about. So with my first answer, watch what you watch not only does knowing about media help girls feel confident about herself knowing that media is a bad influence. But with healthy living maybe the girl would feel better about them selves and not only feel confident in one area.

2 hour Presentation Rough Draft

Sponge Activity: (Have them sit junior senior)
I’m going to have them draw a picture on what they think girls should look like, what society wants them to look like and how they want to look as partners.
Introduction:EQ +Define ItFoundation: (Career or History)Talk about how in 1960 the model Twiggy started the skinny look, or talk about Photoshop?Body: Answer 1: (15)
Being Aware of what media puts out there. So my first answer is being aware of what media puts out there. Media has put this idea out there that skinny is the “it” thing, which isn’t true a all. So I will be showing things about photo shop such as pictures and videos, I may also pass magazines around.
Activity:
I’m not sure yet, I was thinking about doing like a group peer chat, where we talk about what in media bugs us. Or how much pressured we feel as teenagers by media.

Answer 2: (15)
Healthy living consists of eating right, but also not beating your self up for having ice cream every once in awhile. But also exercising in a healthy way. Not over doing it, and knowing your body’s limits when doing strenuous exercises.
Activity:
I was thinking of having food and showing them what’s good to eat and what’s not. Or maybe doing partner exercises with the partner they feel comfortable with.
Conclusion:In conclusion my three best sources where, Liz Frost and her book Young Women and the Body
What is the best way to help a girl with her self esteem. What I mean by it is a lot of girls especially in their teenage years do not feel confident about them selves with all the pressure around them. They have to do good in school, while having friends, and having to be the hottest girl in school. Along with all the media that is shoved in her face everyday. So what I want out of my essential question is what is the best or the most effective way I could help a teenage girl feel good about the way she feels about herself.
Why the topicOver the summer when the senior team asked us to think about what it is we would like to do as our topic, I knew what I was going to do from day one. Sickle cell anemia, I mean I have it and I know I could do my service learning at my hospital and this will be a walk in the park. But after I thought about there are two reasons I don’t want to do it. Not only do I not want to be sick of my own disease after six months of working on it, but I wanted to do something that would make an impact on more then one persons life. So I figured that if I choice self esteem, something everyone struggles with would have a way higher impact that sickle cell.
Plan for the day
So as far as today goes I will be going over things that lower a girls self esteem and then explaining simple ways she would be able to raise it. We will be doing two activities that correspond with my answers.

Independent Study 2

Log: I created a blog on tumblr, I created it on February 09 2011, and I have spent a lot of time with it. I am really proud of it, because I spent everyday or at least every other day working on it and posting stuff.

2. Posted Evidence: http://watchwhatyouwatch.tumblr.com/

3. Literal:

(a) “I, Atiana P. affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.”

(b) As of February 9th, I created a blog analysing pictures just like my last independent component, but this time I commented about quotes, and saying and pictures as well.

Interpretive:

I really feel like this blog that I have created not only helped me with my component because my essential question is how can you best help a girl, and the people who are following my, I feel like I have helped them out in some way. When some one re-bloged something I post, or likes it i feel like the message I was trying to get across worked. I posted pictures about both of my answers. My blog talks about healthy living, and how to eat healthier and exercise with out over doing it. I also posted different scenarios that could happen if you were a leader of a self esteem group and girls had problem. I made a little guide to help the "leader" handle the situation. Such as, she doesn't feel comfortable around guys. Then I explain how she could go about the situation. I even put songs that I feel are inspirational songs that could make a girl feel good about her self. So i'm really proud of it.

Applied:

My blog, I believed helped my answer my EQ because I got to see how other girls blogged. For example a girls blog (http://lightestweight.tumblr.com/post/4977826739) where she talks about eating only 971 calories and then exercising 437 calories off, so for the day she got a total of 533 calories!! This is a problem, why is she striving to be so then. Plus her blog all she posts are girls who are skinny. So for my answer I choose HEALTHY LIVING instead of just exercise and eating right. The difference being their is a limit on how much exercise you should do and how you shouldn't worry about having ice cream for dessert on one night.

Independent Study 1

Content:
1. Since we talked at my advisory metting, about 5,6 weeks ago. I spent every day instead of reading, reading a magazine for a hour.

2. Posted Evidence (Example: For a college class, take a photo of your transcript and upload it).

3. Complete the LIA:
Literal

(a) I Atiana Price affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.

(b) Explanation of what you completed.
I have gotten magazines since 2008. I spent an hour looking at every magazine. I noticed what was in the magazine, the articles in the magazine. With the magazines, I took out ads that caught my eye and wrote what i thought about the ads. With some of the ad's I noticed how the ad's have changed since 2008 till now. I noticed the difference between the girls on the cover and how many photo shopped covers they have. I also watched my an episode of America's Next Top Model. I analyzed the pictures that the girls took at the end of each challenge and tried to figure out if they corrected any of the photos.

Interpretive
I spent an hour or more picking apart Seventeen magazine. I noticed what they did different what they did the same, and i wrote a half page summary about it. I read all the articles in the magazine and thought about what it was that pointed out a specific group. For example, an article talked about sex. Seventeen magazine is not just for seventeen year olds. that means the younger girls think its okay and are reading more then they should be.

Applied
This shows me was exactly girls see and what may make them feel bad about there bodies. It shows why girls would have self esteem problems with all the photo shopped work that are in magazines.

ESLR Check

Content:
1. I think this year has really helped learn alot more about computers applications and the internet. I have learned to reasearch much more effectivly. I have also learned how to navigate excel a lot better because of the W.B needed for reasearch check.
2. Before I had no clue how to use excel. Because of senior project, I have learned everything that I think I need to know about excel. I did not know how to wrap the text before this year. I didn't know how to print an excel document with out printing all the other boxes that came with it.
3. What I can improve on is finding better reasearch. I need to find reasearch beyond the media. Maybe it could be a emotional thing in the mind that makes the body feel a less self value about it self. I don't know but I need to find out if maybe there is something else.
