1. Media is the biggest effect on teenager self esteem. Pretty women in the magazines
2. Friends and the people around you (i.e mom, dad, siblings, peers) also have to do a lot with how you fell about your self. comments do hurt you if said in an negative way even if they say it doesn't.
3. The teenage girls I have talked to so far say they feel more confident when guys tell them they are pretty or what ever the case may be over when their friends say they are pretty.
Dove Videos Help A lot. They have little dove films that they have made and they really help you understand what it is about media that is hurting teenagers images about themselves.

EQ
EQ: What is the best way to help teenage girls feel confident about their bodies?
(1) Define possible terms in your EQ (e.g. successful, effective).
Best Way: something that is helpful for the girls to do.
Confident: To hold their head up high a be able to feel good about the way they look, or a flaw that they may have.(2) So far based on your research, what are possible answers to your EQ?
I noticed media has to do alot with the influence of what girls should look like, or what society thinks girls should look like. It's every where. Magazines, music videos, television, and billboards.
(3) What has been your most important printed source and why?
Media wise dove commercials have been really good, but sources I have received from CalPoly database have been really good. I'm not sure which one it is because it is currently in my folder at school. It's about how even online it is hard to not feel like your not good enough. There is a dating website called beautifulpeople.com? and they actually kick people off if they are not considered "pretty."

Idea Approval
What would you like to do/create for your independent component?
I actually was thinking about making a club with Valerie Dulay at school. What we would do is have girls talk about what keeps them down from feeling good about their bodies, and how media and what types of media effect the way they see themselves.
If that is not possible, I plan to work at my hospital. They have a group of girls that go to patients rooms and give them make overs and talk about what they are good at and show them everything good about them. By doing this, this alows them to think about the good and not worry about the bad.
Explain how you think this will be a worthwhile use of 30 hours?
Talking to different girls and seeing how and what effects them will be useful finding out what is making them feel down about themselves. Whether it's seeing skinny models in the magazine, or having family members pressure them into losing weight. What ever it maybe this will help see all the different flaw that are out there in the world that are making girls feel like this.
How will this help you to answer your EQ?
My essential question is what is the best way to help teenage girls feel confident about their bodies?

By finding out what is hurting girls view of themselves, maybe that will lead me to finding out what it is best for them to do about staying positive. The club and the hospital will let me learn about a variety of self esteem issues I may have never thought about.

Interview Reflection #1
1. The most important thing that I probably learned was it's totally different for everyone. As far as recovering from self esteem issue, to what kind of issues they are dealing with are very different. I think this was important to know because that means there are different methods certain people, as far as healing. I
Five-Minute Presentation Reflection
1. What I think stood out was having all the examples of what the magazines and showing every one why it is a girl could get have a self esteem issue. I think every one saw what i was saying because there were a lot of ohhh and oh yea's that I heard. I
2. I think the hardest part was either having everyone being able to see the pictures in the magazine or trying to say everything I wanted to. I want to say more but I had 2 seconds left so I wasn't able to say it. Over all i think I did well and I got a lot of compliments so I'm excited about that.

5 - Minute Presentation
I will be teaching them what most girls see when they look in magazines. What the media puts out there, and why girls may have a low self esteem. I want to show them a bit of what most girls go through.
Objective: Students will learn what magazines look like in a different perspective then just looking at the pictures in a magazine.
Procedures:
Introduction of what my topic is about. 1:00 minute
- Hi my name is Atiana and my senior topic is self esteem. How many of you know how many teenagers deal with self esteem issues?
Seventeen Magazine Example: 1min 30 sec
- What is the main thing that stands out on this cover? And why do you think they do that?
- They do this so that girls who don't think they are pretty buy there magazines so that they can become pretty. They think well if i do everything this magazine tells me to do then I will soon become pretty.
H&M Catalog: 1min 30 sec
- Flip thought the magazine and ask them what ethnicity's they see. There are only caucasians in the magazine.
- Explain how some girls may feel that there is only on kinda of pretty, because if there is only nationality they see, how do they know what is pretty if they don't see it.
Close: 30 sec
- Explain what I want to get out of it.
Thank You
Check for Understanding:
- Make sure I ask questions. Make sure every one sees the pictures in the magazines, and explain what I mean when I say there is one ethnicity in the magazine and make them realize why so many girls may feel so insure.

Interview 1 Prep
The person I am hoping to interview is a lady who has counselor center for teenage girls. I think this would be a really good interviewee because the counselors have seen it all. They have worked with all different ages and have seen all different issues. I think this will be a really good idea because hopefully they have organizations they can send me to.
1. I am interested in going into girls counseling. What can you tell me about it?
2. From your perspective, what could I study that would be more significant to other people?
3. Who else would you recommend me to talk to?
4. I am required to complete 50 hours of service learning related to my topic. What kind of places or activities would you recommend for this requirement?
5. What books should I read in this field? What other resources can you recommend?
What More Do I Plan.
1. What ethnicity of girls would you say come here the most? Why is it that you think they have the most self esteem problems?
2. What do you do with girls who have lows self esteem, for example where do you send them?
3. Do you have an organization you recommend me to?
4. What are the top issues girls come in here for? Body Image, or Face, or anything else.
5. How long does it usually take for girls to start felling confident about themselves?

Topic
My first idea for my project is Sickle Cell Anemia. It hits really close to home as far as having experienced it because I have it. I was diagnosed at seven years old at the City of Hope Hospital. From age one to seven, my family had no idea that I had sickle cell because I am in the only one in my family who has it. My parents always said I was a whiny baby, and that my right arm always hurt when I was younger. They would take me to the hospital, and the doctors couldn't explain why it was I had pain. The doctors thought my father abused me because they couldn't figure out what was wrong. Sickle Cell is not just in African Americans, it is in the Hispanic race also. Caucasian and other races don't show symptoms as much as African Americans or Hispanics but, they do have it. Not a lot of people know about sickle cell and I just want people to be aware that it is a genetic disease, and it is out there.
My second topic is about the way teenage girls pick on them selves. Girls continue to pick on their bodies and their face because of what they see in magazines or on television. Girls do not think they are pretty, or beautiful, and that's sad to see a girl walking around not having confidence in the way she looks. As a teenager, I would look at magazines and say wow I want her body, or man I wish I was as pretty as her. What i didn't know was I am. A different kinda of pretty, but i am. Plain and simple. What some teenage girls don't know is that what they see in the magazines isn't real. The company has picked her apart to make her an look skinner and prettier (taking away pimples, and stretch marks). She has spent four hours in hair and make-up, and she had a professional pick out her clothes. So how can you own up to a computer generated person? You can't. I want girls to do is stop trying to look like the girls in magazines because they can't be them, and are beautiful the way they are. They don't need six gallons of make up to do so.
